How To Make a 1950's Blouse | Beginner Sewing Project

This is a fantastic 1950’s style sewing project for beginners! I made it with nothing but a pillow case and some thread. If you’re looking for a classy looking vintage style garment to make, but are newer to sewing, this is a perfect project for you! I’ve also discovered that the image I referenced is from 1960. But there are a lot of similar tops and dresses from the 50’s as well. It very much epitomizes that sort of transitional period from the fashion of the 1950’s to the 1960’s.

  1. 36″ bust here (27″ underbust, it’s a whole mess lol) and let me warn you, if you have a larger bust and want to try to make this, only cut the seams away from the sides of the pillowcase, don’t try to cut the fabric down based on your chest measurement. You’re going to lose A LOT of seam allowance when you create your darts. I even re-sized my darts from 4 inches between the legs down to two and a half inches and I still lost around an inch and a half of fabric from the sides. Additionally, don’t try to eyeball the dart placement. Pin the front piece and the back piece together at each shoulder, slip it over your head and with some chalk or a pencil, mark out the bust points, even better if you can fold and pin the darts. Your dart spacing will also likely be wider than the “nipple to nipple” measurement, so consider that as well if you rather not try it on to measure
And above all else, feel free to measure and mark, but don’t cut the armhole until you’ve finished (and sewn or at least basted) the bust adjustments or you’ll only end up needing to redo them to accommodate the changes you’ve made. I hope this helps any larger busted people, please learn from my mistakes 😂
